September 2, 2021 – The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is providing preliminary information regarding a shooting incident on King Street, Downtown, Kingston today.
The police have reported that four police officers were on motorcycle patrol when a taxi was signaled to stop for a traffic violation. It is alleged that the driver disobeyed the request and drove off, causing injury to a police officer. It is further reported that the police subsequently fired at the vehicle. Upon examination, two persons, a male taxi driver and female passenger were seen with injuries.
INDECOM Investigators can confirm that the injured occupants of the taxi were taken to the Kingston Public Hospital for treatment. The unidentified taxi driver has succumbed to the injuries sustained. Our Investigators have been informed that the injured police officer, was treated and released.
INDECOM Investigators continue to process the incident scene and undertake investigative actions, including requests for footage from CCTV cameras in the area. An update with additional investigative actions completed will be provided.
Witness information is vital to any investigation, and persons who can assist in this regard, are asked to contact the Commission. Members of the public are also reminded that they have a duty to obey all lawful instructions of the police; comply then complain. Comply with instructions given, then complain or make a report to INDECOM if there are any allegations of wrongdoing.
