January 30, 2017 – The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing the following fatal shooting incidents:
- Fatal shooting of Andre Denton (January 30)
- Fatal shooting of Jason Samuels (January 30)
- Fatal shooting of Phillip Grant (January 29)
Fatal shooting of Andre Denton
The fatal shooting of 29-year old Andre Denton at 12 Metcalf Road, Kingston 13 occurred at approximately 6:25 this morning.
The report, received by INDECOM from the police, is that there was a joint military and police operation in the area, with a search warrant for Omar Denton.
Four (4) officers entered a premises, and it is alleged that the now deceased had pointed a firearm in the direction of the police. An officer opened fire and the now deceased fell to the ground.
Fatal shooting of Jason Samuels
The fatal shooting of Jason Samuels in Settlement District, Old Harbour Bay, St. Catherine occurred at approximately 4:30, this morning.
The report, received by INDECOM from the police, is that a group of 13 JCF officers were on an operation in Settlement District and saw a man running and pursued him. The man allegedly ran into a house and closed the door. The officers identified themselves and instructed for the door to be opened. With no compliance, the door was kicked down and they saw a man pointing a gun in their direction. One officer fired two rounds in the direction of Mr. Samuels.
Fatal shooting of Phillip Grant
The fatal shooting of Phillip Grant at 4 Morris Avenue, Spring Bank Road, Portland occurred at approximately 7:20, yesterday morning.
The report, received by INDECOM from the police, is that two Constables received radio transmission of a serious threat and went to 4 Morris Avenue. The now deceased, ran into the premises, returned armed with a knife and began threatening the police officers. The officers identified themselves and instructed Mr. Grant to drop the knife. Mr. Grant struck one of the officers in his face with a piece of board, and the officer discharged two rounds in Mr. Grant’s direction.
Teams from INDECOM have processed the scenes, the bodies of the deceased and continue to make enquiries. The concerned officers are to give an initial account and will be served with Notices to visit the INDECOM office for their account of the incident to be recorded.
