February 9, 2022 – A team from the Western Regional Office of the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) responded to and began investigations into a police fatal shooting of a man in Amity District (Cypress Corner) in Westmoreland on February 8. The deceased has been identified as 30 year old, Dain Wedderburn, who was described by his relatives as being of unsound mind.
It is reported that police officers were on an assignment in the Cypress Corner area when they approached a naked man, who was seen along the roadway. It is alleged that a struggle ensued between one of the officers and the man, when the private firearm of the police officer was discharged. The man was pronounced dead at the Savanna-La-Mar Hospital. No weapon (firearm or other item) was reported as retrieved from the incident scene.
The Commission’s enquiries into this incident are ongoing. INDECOM processed the incident scene, to include the collection of forensic exhibits and the firearm of the concerned officer. Initial interviews and witness canvassing were also conducted by the Investigative team.
Fatal Shooting in St. James
The Commission has been advised of another fatal shooting incident today, resulting in the death of another man in the Western Region. An INDECOM team has been dispatched to commence investigations into the joint/ police military incident which occurred in St. James. Additional details will be provided once available. Today’s incident represents the fourth fatal shooting, by the police, for the month of February.
The assistance of witnesses is very important in any investigation, and persons are therefore reminded to contact the Commission’s Head Office and share any information that will be useful to open investigations.
