May 14, 2022 – A team from the Western Regional Office of the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) responded to and began investigations into an off-duty police fatal shooting of a man at a bar on Jarrett Street in Montego Bay, St. James on May 13. The deceased has been identified as Kadmar Beadle.
The police reported that an off-duty police officer and another patron were involved in an altercation at a Bar. During the altercation it is alleged that Mr. Beadle used a knife to inflict a wound to the abdomen of the officer, and Mr. Beadle was subsequently shot by the officer using his service pistol. Both men were taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital, where Mr. Beadle succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. The injured police officer remains hospitalised.
The service weapon of the police officer was recovered, processed and sealed by INDECOM for submission to the Government Forensic Laboratory. The knife allegedly used during the altercation was not recovered during the processing of the incident scene.
Residents who had blocked the road at Hart Street expressed that the fatal shooting of Mr. Beadle was carried out in circumstances which were unjustified. Director of Complaints for the Western Region, Errol Chattoo, advised a family member to encourage persons gathered to discontinue their protest and to visit the INDECOM office at Praise Concourse Plaza in Montego Bay, St. James to share any information that may have been seen or heard in relation to this incident. The police officer involved in this incident will be required to provide a statement and attend the office of the Commission to be interviewed at an appropriate time.
