April 27, 2021 – The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) responded to and began an investigation into a fatal shooting of an unidentified man, by a Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldier, at the Denham Town Enhanced Security Measures (ESM) base this morning.
The JDF has reported, that a team of soldiers had recently returned to the base after completing a patrol, when a man with an object advanced toward one of the soldiers. It is further reported that the soldier was hit with the object and the man was pushed off. The man attempted to advance at the solider again, and the soldier discharged his weapon. The injured man was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH), where he was pronounced dead.
The recovered object is a piece of wood, measuring 2ft in length and 3 inches in width.
INDECOM’s Forensic Team processed the incident scene, and two 5.56mm spent casings were recovered. The weapons of the concerned officers were seized, photographed, boxed and sealed for testing at the Government Forensic Laboratory. The concerned officers were served Section 21 notices to furnish statements and attend INDECOM to be interviewed.
