April 3, 2020 – Investigators from The Independent Commission of Investigations’ (INDECOM) Central Regional Office responded to and have begun investigations into a fatal shooting and shooting injury incident involving two men. The incident occurred this afternoon in Content District, York Town, Clarendon. The deceased has been identified as 29 year old, Akeem Whyte. The injured man, who is also 29 years old, is not considered to be critical at this time.
It is reported that the shooting incident occurred following a request by police officers for the vehicle, occupied by the men, to stop. The Commission’s investigation will seek to determine the circumstances which resulted in the death and injury. One firearm was allegedly recovered from the scene.
The announcement by the Prime Minister, today, to include INDECOM as an exempted organization is timely and significant. Otherwise, the prompt response, processing and independent probe of this incident would have been in breach of the curfew hours, as the response team is, at this time, still completing investigative actions.
Persons with information about today’s incident are being asked to call INDECOM at (876) 968-8875, (876) 968-1932 or the incident tip line at 888-991-5555. Persons can also message us on whatsapp at 876-553-5555.
