January 17, 2024 – The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is investigating the off-duty police fatal shooting of 52 year old, Ivanhoe Stewart. The incident occurred on January 16, 2024 at a Bar & Lounge in Comfort, Manchester.

The off-duty police officer reported that the now deceased was a customer of the Bar & Lounge, when the officer noticed a firearm in Stewart’s hand. A reported tussle ensued when the officer stated that he attempted to disarm the man. The officer subsequently shot at the man using the seized firearm. The man succumbed to the injuries sustained.

The firearm allegedly recovered from the incident, which was reported as retrieved from the now deceased, was a black Taurus G2C with serial number.

The incident scene was examined by INDECOM’s Forensic personnel and the evidential material recovered, was processed and packaged. The hands of the deceased were swabbed for gunshot residue.  The concerned officer provided an initial account to the INDECOM team and was served with a Section 21 Notice, pursuant to the Independent Commission of Investigations Act, 2010, to submit statement and an interview will be scheduled.

INDECOM reminds members of the public, that information gathering is a critical aspect of an investigative process, and where photos, videos, or information is available in incidents involving members of the Security Forces, same should be made available and shared with INDECOM.

For January 2024, there have been eight fatal shooting investigations.
