January 15, 2017 – The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of six men in a joint military/ police operation in Goodwill, St. James last night.
The operation, which involved members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and the Mobile Reserve of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), was in response to alleged information received about a gang involved in recent shootings in the area of Barrett Town in the parish.
The vehicles in which the alleged gunmen were travelling, were intercepted during the operation. Gunfire was exchanged between the men and members of the security forces.
There is evidence of visible damage to one of the JDF vehicles involved in the operation.
Four handguns were recovered at the scene, which it is alleged belonged to the gunmen. The six men, who are still unidentified, were pronounced dead at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
Our team, who are still on scene, has been on the ground since late last night conducting forensic examinations, interviewing members of the security forces, canvassing for witnesses and other investigations.
The members of the JDF have been very cooperative during the investigations.
A further press statement will be issued, as the investigations continue.
