May 1, 2017 – The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) extends condolences to the family and colleagues of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) who lost two of their members this past weekend. Constable Leighton Hanson, of St. Andrew North Division, and Sergeant Dale Thompson, of the Kingston Central Criminal Investigation Branch, succumbed to injuries they received while dutifully serving and protecting the citizens of Jamaica.

The actions of unlawful citizens are strongly condemned by the Commission, and the perilous task, faced by the members of the Security Forces, is fully recognised. Proportionate and reasonable use of force in protection of self, colleagues and well-thinking Jamaicans must continue to guide the decisions when confronted with situations of justice and risk to life.

We thank Constable Hanson and Sergeant Thompson for their service to their country.

The incident surrounding the murder of Constable Hanson, will be investigated by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). There is some public information that Hanson’s killer was himself killed by members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF). As the JDF personnel were not on duty, the Commission has no remit to investigate.
