May 25, 2021 – The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) responded to and began investigations into two separate fatal shooting incidents by the police in Trelawny and Clarendon.

  1. Fatal Shooting of Tyrone Powell – Cotton Tree District, Albert Town, Trelawny

The police have reported that on Sunday, May 23, 2021 at approximately 8:00pm, five officers were making enquiries regarding a man armed with a gun in the community. On arrival of the police, it is alleged that the man attacked the police with a machete. Four of the officers fired their weapons in response to that attack. The deceased was identified as 29 year old, Tyrone Powell.

No firearm was recovered but a machete was reported as retrieved at the incident scene.

  1. Fatal Shooting of Alrick Williams – Lionel Town Housing Scheme, Clarendon

The police have reported that an off-duty police officer was involved in a fatal shooting incident of his younger brother, following a family dispute, on Monday, May 24, 2021 at approximately 8:00am. The deceased was identified as 29 year old, Alrick Williams.

The police reported that the off-duty officer visited the Toronto Road home in an effort to remove his brother from the premises following a recent dispute with another relative. A tussle ensued between the brothers, where it is alleged that the now deceased used an iron pipe to hit the officer. During the fight, the officer fired his service pistol, at his brother, fatally wounding him.

An iron pipe was recovered from the incident scene.

The concerned officer provided an initial account to INDECOM Investigators and is cooperating with the investigation.

INDECOM’s Forensic Team, alongside officers from JCF Scenes of Crime, processed the two incident scenes. The weapons of the concerned officers were seized, photographed, boxed and sealed for testing at the Government Forensic Laboratory. All concerned officers were served Section 21 notices to furnish statements and attend the offices of INDECOM to be interviewed this week.
